1. From the Chair 
Dear Bridge Enthusiast,

I hope this newsletter finds you well and that you are enjoying the lovely summer weather we are having presently.
I have recently been playing bridge in the Summer Congress, which has now moved permanently from Brighton to Eastbourne. I must say what a lovely town Eastbourne is, it has managed to keep the old seaside town atmosphere without becoming tacky and not  a hen or stag night in sight. The venue we played at The Winter Gardens is spacious, the event well run and the selection of restaurants for an evening meal excellent. Parking was £2 a day not £20 as in Brighton and hotels reasonably priced. A good move by the EBU I think, I certainly enjoyed the experience and would thoroughly recommend the venue and event.

Back in Hampshire we are about to start our 2016/2017 programme of events, this will include three educational seminars (details of the first below) a range of knockout competitions and leagues, as well as a monthly event. Details of the first few events can be found below, a full list of events and entry forms is available on the county website.

Also of note is a club directors training course running throughout the Autumn at Lymington Bridge Club. Both EBU affiliated and non affiliated clubs are welcome to use these courses. Details here.

If you have not tried one of the HIWCBA events before why not give one a try. Last season we had a good number of newcomers, most came back for a second and third time and  are continuing this season.
Some vouchers for free entry to County events for newcomers are being circulated with programme cards to all clubs in Hampshire soon, please do use them.

Educational Seminars

The first of our three educational seminars 'Breaking all the rules"  will be held on
Sunday 6th November 2016 at the Crosfield Hall, Romsey. This seminar will be led by our editor, Grand Master and International Player Dave Huggett and will follow the formula that has proved so popular at previous seminars. There will be an interactive teaching session lasting approximately 1 hour, then an interlude for light refreshments followed by a supervised play session of illustrative hands to bring to life the lecture points. The cost of this seminar will be £5.

The content will involve looking at some of the common "rules" of bridge and how and when to apply them and when it is right to ignore them. You will be encouraged to think logically about the play and bidding of the hand to maximise your chance of success.

We have limited places available on these seminars so please reserve you place as soon as possible.
